Well it’s proof that the big Bluegill will eat. This young lady here caught this monster 12oz bluegill right under the boathouse. It’s proof that you can catch fish in the middle of the day……under the boathouse

Well I’ve posted plenty of times telling you about fishing early morning. My tactics change a little bit in the summer compared to other times in the year. I like to start out my mornings throwing top water. I usually tie on one of three things: Buzzbait, Popper, or a cigar bait(spook). I have been really falling in love with the Rage Tail Rage Shad, which I posted about in the past. I’ve caught some really nice bass with those. Next step is to fish on the bottom with a natural approach: Texas Rig or Shaky Head. I personally like to throw a Texas Rigged curltail worm then the shaky head. Shaky head fishing can be deadly. When fishing these techniques I usually go as light as I can. I will normally throw a 1/8 oz or 3/16 oz weight (this one only on super windy days). Less weight the more sensitive the rig. If that doesn’t work I’ll fall back on the crankbaits I can cover a lot of water that way. Once I locate the fish by using the crankbait I’ll start to pick them apart on the bottom with the techniques listed above. Here’s some pictures from last weekend’s trip: Also don’t forget to attend our fishing club meeting this weekend at Doc’s Boathouse. We will be going out on the lake and seeing some of my Honey Holes. Tight Lines Everyone! It’s getting hot out there in the middle of the day still, but the early morning bite is still there! I would be throwing a popper, buzzbait, or a creature bait on the bottom. The reacton bite in the morning is always the first thing I go to. Big thing to remember is keep at it. This time of the year is a little tougher due to the heat but there are still bass being caught. Remember we have a fishing club meeting next Saturday @ 11am at Doc’s Boathouse. We will be going out on the lake and I will be showing some of my hot spots. Hope to see everyone there! Tight Lines Everyone ![]() Buzz Bait ![]() POPPER Well Summer is here and so is the heat! Well there is a way to beat the heat, and catch some really nice fish. Wake up early and hit the water or wait and go out in the evening. The best times right now have been from before sunrise to about 9 or 9:30am and the evenings have been good from 6:30 to sundown. The bass have mainly been caught on softbaits on the bottom, yet that doesn’t mean you are limited to fishing on the bottom. I have also caught some really nice bass on top water and with lipless crankbaits. These bass in the pictures below were caught on topwater Rage Shads. <…Link So keep fishing in the mornings and evenings to get the better bites. I would be throwing natural colored soft baits for now and if they aren’t hitting those go with a good contrasting color. You are able to rent boats at the boathouse on Wednesdays from 7 to 6 and we are open later on Friday and Saturday nights (till 8pm). Or you can go out fishing with me at anytime you would like, just shoot me an email or stop by the shop. Well we are still catching a good bit of bass even though the temperatures are really getting up there. The best thing to do to beat the heat is get up early and be on the water around 7 am (or earlier the better) I have been doing the best in my early morning trips. The stick worms have been great producers for me. With this clear water you want to use a “natural color” preferably a green pumpkin, pumpkinseed, or watermelon. Rigging the stick worms wacky, weightless, or Texas rigged. Also spinnerbaits are great thing to toss around the aerators. The aerators bring cooler water from the bottom to the top and the shad love it. So by throwing a shad imitation through that area it really increases your odds! We have been catching some whoopers down here at the boathouse bass over 4lbs ! Tight Lines! We have been catching some nice size bass down at the dock and around the lake. I attached some pictures today to give you an idea of what they are biting on. This is a Stick worm that has been doing well too, fish it Texas Rigged, weightless, or on a shaky head Also your standard Lipless Crankbaits Using Lipless crankbaits to find the fish. Chrome on sunny days and dull/matte finishes on cloudy days Texas Rigged Worms are great baits this time of year as well. Power worms are my favorite because of their slow fall Rig these with a light bullet weight texas rigged and toss around structure. All of this info will be explained in more detail out our fishing club meeting Saturday May 8th @ 11:00am. Tight Lines Everyone! We are seeing the bass off the beds and hitting almost anything. We have been using texas rigged worms, shaky heads, rat-l-traps, and spinnerbaits. All of these have produced fish for us. I caught this 6lb 6oz bass (ties Wade Bales record bass) on a shaky head with a stick worm. Remember we have a fishing club meeting next weekend May 8th at 11am. Hope to see you there! Tight Lines everyone! Bryan Rhame caught this great bass off the boathouse dock. It weighed in at 5lbs 3oz. It was 2oz shy of the 2nd place bass caught by Kelly Duncan last year (5lbs 5oz) Bryan caught the bass on a whacky worm right by the Tackle Box. This was one big PIG! The Report around the lake is that everything from Lipless Crankbaits to worms has been producing quality fish. I’ve been using carolina and texas rigged worms and creature baits to catch a majority of my fish. Shaky Head has been a top producer as well. When Fishing the Lipless Crankbaits this time of year you want to be focusing on the secondary points and different shelves. Throw all around them and see what they like. Dull Colors on cloudy days and shiny colors on bluebird sky days. Rememebr you can come by the Tackle Box to see me and book a trip to go out on the lake and catch some nice bass. Tight Lines Everyone! Fishing this time of year is always great. There is the cool mornings and the warm days, the nice breezes. The other great part is the water starts to warm up and the bass start to feed like crazy! We have been doing pretty good the last couple of weeks. We have been seeing our bass numbers go way up. I went out last Friday I got on the water at 7:00am sharp. I was planning on hitting some of the feeders before 8am because that is when they were going off. I threw a lip-less crank-bait around the feeder back by the Coach Homes. “BOOM!!!” as soon as it hit the water I had a huge strike. I set the hook and held on. Well what I thought was going to be the lake record Hybrid turned out to be a 10lb grass carp. You can see in the pictures below that I actually hooked the carp perfectly in the lips. That tells me the he went after it on purpose. I was shocked! Well after I released the fish I went on to the boat ramp and caught two short fish there on a Carolina Rig. I continued around the cove till I got blown out of there from the wind. I worked in some of the narrow coves a Texas rigged worm. I caught another couple of fish there as well. What I learned from this trip was that the bass bite in the morning is much better than the evening this time of year. I will always have a whacky worm, lip-less crank bait, and a Texas/Carolina Rigged Worm set up. Get out there and get some tight lines! Well for the last week now we have been doing great. We have had nothing but tight lines. Fishing in the middle of the days on cooler days and fishing all day on the warmer days. The Bass have been biting mainly on soft baits. We have been using the yum zellamanders and the zoom worms. Texas rigging is you best bet but some have been caught on lipless crankbaits as well. The bass have been ranging in the high one pound range up into the mid five pound range! We have been seeing more and more 4lbers caught in the last couple of weeks than ever! Well get out there and catch some! Come by and see me at The Tackle Box, or come to one of our fishing club meetings April 10th at the lakehouse @ 11:00am. Tight Lines Everyone! |
